The best Glass for the money. I have been a Canon user for many years and have experience with decades of body and lens transitions. Being a L-Glass f2.8 fan I never would have thought to consider a f/4L until one brought and I picked up a 70-200 f/4 and was pleasantly surprised by its light weight, smaller size for packing but best of all image quality.

Besides, the f/4 is almost 30% cheaper and lighter. Unless youre shooting extremely low light the f/4 is the way to go.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM Lens has even better image quality and of course, IS. Relative to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens, the f/4 IS has more CA at the longer half of the focal length range and more vignetting at f/4. Otherwise, the both of these lenses have impressive image quality.

EF70-200mm f/4L IS II USM. An improved version of Canon’s f/4 L-series fixed aperture telephoto zoom lens, popular for its light weight and compact body. It features optics optimized for higher image quality, a shorter minimum focusing distance (1m), and improved image stabilisation (up to approximately 5 stops).

(Note: there are third party "clone" petal-shaped hoods available for the f4 versions, if really wanted). - The f2.8 lenses use 77mm filters, which are a fairly standard size among Canon lenses. The f4 lenses use a 67mm filter, with is rather less common size among Canon lenses, tho it seems to be becoming more common on newer models.
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II Lens vs. Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens comparison shows the two lenses weighing the same and having the same length. The Tamron lens is slightly thinner and shorter when fully extended (but it only goes to 180mm). The thinner lens uses narrower filters, 67mm vs. 72mm.
